Alicja Rogalska, Pretend you’ve got no money, Audio, 30’’43’, 2021.
Alicja Rogalska’s practice is guided by research focusing on social structures and the political subtext of the everyday. Rogalska predominantly works in specific context making situations, performances, videos, and installations in collaboration with other people, in order to collectively search for emancipatory ideas for the future. For the ‘Bread and Butter’ exhibition, the audio tour ‘Pretend you’ve got no money’ was chosen, intended not for consumption in the exhibition but rather in a local supermarket, thus moving outside the physical museal setting into our everyday lives. In this act, the urgency of the topic expressed is transferred to the other spheres of life. Conceived to introduce disruption into daily shopping habits, the tour invites the audience to have a different kind of engagement with their local supermarket, treating it as a ready-made scenography for a meandering, playful, and mildly choreographic narrative on the politics of food production, distribution, and consumption. ‘Pretend you’ve got no money’ invites us to critically think about our day-to-day choices and their impact on society and environment.
